With the start of the new academic year, ESIC Business & Marketing School is launching a new edition of its Pre-University Debate Tournament, an initiative organized under the framework of the Divina Seguros\u2013ESIC Chair of Analytical Thinking. The event will once again bring together students from various educational centers in the Valencian Community and Murcia with the aim of fostering critical thinking, effective communication, argumentation, and teamwork.<\/p>\n\n

Following the success of the previous edition, which saw the participation of six schools and 80 first- and second-year Baccalaureate students, the tournament is expanding its call this year to include students in the third and fourth years of Compulsory Secondary Education. In this way, the initiative seeks to bring the practice of academic debate closer to young people at different stages of their pre-university education and offer them a space to learn how to organize, defend, and contrast their ideas.<\/p>\n\n

The tournament will be held on November 5, 6, and 7, 2026, and will feature two qualifying rounds and a final. The Alicante and Murcia centers will participate on Thursday, November 5, from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., at the AITEX headquarters in Alcoy. Meanwhile, the teams from Valencia and Castell\u00f3n will compete on Friday, November 6, at the same time, at the ESIC Valencia facilities. The two best teams from each round will qualify for the final, which will take place on Saturday, November 7, from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM, at Calderona Wellness Valencia.<\/p>\n\n

The central premise of this edition will be: “Does advertising manipulate more than it informs?” This issue is closely linked to the students’ everyday environment and to ESIC’s own area of \u200b\u200bspecialization; it offers an opportunity to reflect on the influence of advertising messages, the relationship between information and persuasion, and the role of the public in responding to the various commercial and communicative stimuli they encounter. Teams must prepare to defend both the pro and con positions, as the stance they take will be determined by a draw.<\/p>\n\n

The question invites us to delve into a complex issue for which there is no single answer. To construct their arguments, participants will need to conduct research, select sources, evaluate the quality of the evidence, and anticipate the opposing team’s positions. It will not suffice, therefore, to express a personal opinion. Students must transform their first impressions into well-founded, coherent arguments capable of withstanding questioning from their opponents.<\/p>\n\n

The second round will also incorporate an added challenge: the impromptu debate. The topic will be selected at random from three possible proposals, and the teams will have fifteen minutes to prepare their position. This format will test their ability to analyze an unforeseen issue, quickly identify the most relevant aspects, organize available information, and build a joint strategy within a limited period of time.<\/p>\n\n

Beyond the competition, the tournament aims to turn the spoken word into a learning tool. Preparing a position, listening to the opposing team, responding respectfully, and reviewing one’s own arguments are exercises that foster an open and critical attitude toward reality. Debating allows one to understand that defending a position is not just about speaking with confidence, but also about listening, interpreting, selecting information, and recognizing the complexity of the problems analyzed.<\/p>\n\n

The experience of the previous edition, held in February 2026, highlighted the commitment and argumentative ability of the participating teams. On that occasion, the students worked on competencies such as analytical thinking, persuasion, emotional management, creativity, and problem-solving. With this new call for entries, ESIC and Divina Seguros renew their commitment to offering pre-university students a demanding and enriching academic environment in which to confront ideas with rigor, learn to defend them, and discover that debating is not just about convincing, but also about listening, questioning, and continuing to learn.<\/p>\n\n
